Before you pitch, read what the journalist you are pitching has written about.
This may be over stating the obvious, but it’s a basic and fundamental principle I live by.
This is particularly true in the work I do with technology clients, where tech journalists will have specific beat coverage – i.e. security, data management, operating systems, Internet, eCommerce, etc.
Reading a journalist’s previous body of work gives you sense for what they have written, their understanding of the beat they cover and the opportunity to help you, help them tell and share your client, or company’s story.
