This morning at a restuarant in San Miguelle Allende, Mexico, I started talking to a couple from Austin who had moved here eighteen months ago to retire. With a population of about 85,000 people, San Miguelle, has about 10,000 full time expatriate residents.
The nearest major town, Cueretaro, has an OfficeMax, Sams and Cosco, and they told me that driving back to Austin is only 12 hours. Leon is the other major city with a population of 1,000,000 people and has a very modern airport which we flew into from Houston on Continental.
They have cable internet and much to my amazement, they retain an Austin, Texas (512) area code with their Vonage account, which in effect means they are by-bassing the local carrier, TelMex, in favor of an IP-based phone service.
